pls scroll down for english version.Mein Urteil über die letzten zwei Grishams (Camino Island, Rooster Bar) sind nahezu identisch, wenn man es auf einem hohen Level betrachtet:Interessante (Hintergrund-)Geschichten, gut und angenehm geschrieben, ABER - keinerlei Spannung. Alles liest sich total super, läuft flüssig durch die Hand - man bleibt aber komplett im Ruhepuls.Und nun - "The Reckoning":Bitte lesen Sie die eben geschriebene Kurzzusammenfassung meines Urteils über Camino Island und Rooster Bar.Im Ernst. Grisham Schreibt auch The Reckoning in gewohnter angenehmer Manier. Die Charaktere sind interessant, die Story an sich wirklich interessant, gerade auch das Umfeld in Mississippi in den 1940er Jahren. Man lernt viel über die Rassentrennung, Baumwollanbau und über den Weltkrieg in Südost-Asien.Aber, mit Thriller hat das ganze nicht im Entferntesten was zu tun. Es ist halt "a novel". Nett. Mehr leider nicht.Ergänzungen:1. Die Aufklärung der Geschichte wird mMn viel zu lange hinausgezögert.2. Bitte in den "author's notes" mal lesen, wie Grisham zu dieser Geschichte gekommen ist. Erklärt meiner Meinung nach einiges.ENGLISH:Without going too deep into details - my judgement on the last two John Grisham releases (Camino Island, The Rooster Bar) is pretty much identical:Nice story, easy to read, BUT - not at all thrilling or something like that. Again, easy to read, kind of a page turner - but your pulse remains on rest level.And now - "The Reckoning":Please re-read my short review on Camino Island and The Rooster bar and you've got my feedback on The Reckoning.Seriously, also Grisham's latest release is easy to read, a nice story with interesting characters, nice insights on the 1940s in Mississippi. But has nothing in common with something I consider a thriller.It is nice, but that's it already, unfortunately.Notes:1. It takes way too long to come to the final point in this book. Most of the pages are filled with explaing things and telling side-stories.2. please see at the end of the book the author's notes. There Grisham explains how he came to this story. I think this is explaning part of the problems with the story in total.
Eine Geschichte aus drei Teilen in verdrehter Reihenfolge.Langatmig mit Beschreibungen, die kaum für die Story von Bedeutung sind, zum immer wiederholten Male die (diesmal vereinfachten) Gerichtsabläufe, eine mit Penetranz hinausgezögerte Auflösung, die eigentlich schon ganz am Anfang klar war.Ob die Situationen wie beschrieben in den 30ern und 40ern Jahren wirklich so waren, kann ich nicht beurteilen; auf jeden Fall sicher nicht so banal. Und die „Wollust“ mit der Schier endlosen Darstellung der Kriegsgefangenenbehandlungen durch die Japaner gibt der Geschichte den Rest: das war wohl mehr als Füller für viele leere Seiten gedacht.In Summa: ein miserables Buch.
The story is really interesting and suspenseful however it ends really flat. At times the author overdoes it with clichés and pages and pages of triviality that I skipped over. The entire book plays up to why he (the protagonist) did what he did; which is revealed at the end. The climax is soooo ridiculous in comparison to the story. It was definitely disappointing.
Was hat sich John Grisham bei diesem Buch gedacht? Die Story ist schnell erzählt. Aber er dehnt das Ganze aus: Langatmig und detailverliebt berichtet er über immer neue Ausflüge der Bannings-Kinder mit Tante Florry in die Restaurants und Hotels der 40er Jahre. Was die Story keinen Schritt weiter bringt. Ganz interessant und authentisch scheinen die Schilderungen des ländlichen Lebens in Ford-County und insbesondere das Verhältnis der Baumwollfarmer-Familie zu ihren "Negroes". Dramatisch beeindruckend der Todesmarsch der US-Soldaten auf den Phillipinen und der anschließende Guerillia-Kampf. Das war für mich eine neue und unbekannte Seite der US-Geschichte. Historisch interessant. Aber auch dieses Kapitel bringt die Geschichte nicht weiter. Unendlich langwierige juristische Aktionen und Winkelzüge. Nach und nach bricht die Farmer-Familie mitsamt ihren Eigentümern und den Baumwoll-Feldern zusammen. Dieses Buch braucht wirklich viel Geduld. John Grisham, was hast Du Dir dabei gedacht?
I've been a John Grisham fan for years, but I do find that his books are getting weaker and less interesting. There's less law in his books and the they are mostly filled with endless descriptions. This book in particular goes on and on describing the war and what everyone did on a daily basis without mentioning anything important. The one thing everyone wants to know (why Dexter was killed) is revealed within the last few pages and offers nothing that could be tied to anything mentioned in the previous pages. Disappointing!
Dieses Buch spielt wie schon viele andere Grishamromane in Missisippi. Diesmal speitl es in den 40er Jahren.Um nicht zuviel zu spoilern: Dem Buch fehlt es anfänglich entwas an Spannung. Sobald man in die Umgebung eingetaucht ist ist es aber sehr spannend und es wäre kein echter Grisham, wenn der Plot nicht für die eine oder andere Überrschung gut wäre! Für Grishamfans ein absolutes Muss!
Grisham ist einfach ein meisterhafter Erzähler. Diesmal verlässt er für einen Großteil der Geschichte den Gerichtssaal und lässt den Leser an den Gräueln des Guerillakampfes auf den Philippinen während des 2. Weltkrieges teilhaben.Die Geschichte beginnt mit einem unglaublichen und zunächst nicht nachzuvollziehendem Verbrechen. Später fügen sich dann die Bruchstücke zusammen.Besonders beeindruckend fand ich die Schilderung der Auswirkungen dieser einzelnen Tat auf das Schicksal der gesamten Familie.
Not as thriling as his early novels, but still a good read. We learn something about history in Mississippi and the war in the Philippines, and we meet some characters and locations from previous books. Not really a happy ending as I had hoped for most pages.
